If you are suffering from unsightly, itchy or uncomfortable varicose veins, you may be wondering if there is anything you can do to address the issue on your own.
There are a few things you can do before embarking upon treatment
1. Get moving
When it comes to managing varicose veins yourself, one of the best things you can do is regular exercise. The stronger your legs, then the better you will be at overcoming any venous incompetence due to faulty valves, and driving blood back to the heart despite the faulty valves. Low-impact exercises like walking, swimming, or cycling have been shown to be beneficial.
2. Try compression stockings
Mild symptoms associated with varicose veins can often be effectively controlled with compression stockings. Compression stockings can also prevent existing veins from enlarging over time.
If you choose to use compression stockings, it is advisable that you put them on in the morning before you even get out of bed. They are easier to apply at that time of day, when the swelling is at its least.
Compression stockings can help alleviate swollen or aching legs and ankles.
How can we help?
If you have tried the aforementioned home remedies for varicose veins and are still struggling with uncomfortable symptoms or cosmetic concerns, we encourage you to come and see us. Although certain lifestyle changes can help control varicose veins, it is sometimes best to seek professional treatment, especially in cases where the varicose veins have become very prominent and/or painful.
At North Western Vascular, we offer a range of treatment options. This includes surgical treatment, which involves the interruption of the reversed flow from the deep veins to the superficial through the faulty valves, as well as the removal of the obvious varicose veins.
