We often assume that treatment for the removal of varicose veins will be costly, and require weeks recuperating in bed when work, socialising and life keeps going on

Many people suffer from varicose veins, but assume that treating the condition will involve more trouble than it’s worth. What many people don’t know is that modern vein treatments have come a long way, and are less invasive than you think.

In the past, if you suffered from varicose veins, the only treatment option was surgery

This would involve one to two-hour long surgery under general anaesthesia, a groin incision and several small cuts to ligate and strip the veins.  While not a complex procedure, it is performed in a hospital with an overnight stay and a recovery period of 2 weeks (this is occasionally still the best option for treatment).

These days, lasers have revolutionised varicose vein treatment and endovenous laser treatment offers all the benefits of vein stripping surgery without the inconvenience of a hospital stay.  At North Western Vascular, the treatment is done in our Vascular Lab under local anaesthetic. A laser fibre is inserted into the vein and then laser energy is emitted to occlude the treated vein which subsequently shrinks. Discomfort is minimal and laser takes less than an hour.  While you would be required to wear compression stockings for a week and temporarily stop all strenuous exercise, after your procedure you are free to carry on with your day-to-day activities. Nobody would need to know you just treated your varicose veins unless you told them.

One week following the procedure, you will be required to have an ultrasound which is bulk billed and return one week following that for a review to check on your progress (included in your treatment cost).
