How to get rid of spider veins

Spider veins can be effectively treated with advanced laser therapy.

Spider veins are characterised by fine, red lines on the skin that often form in clusters. Also known as telangiectasia, spider veins are most often harmless, but can be a cause of concern because of how they affect the appearance of the skin. The good news is that spider veins can be resolved — read on to find out what your treatment options are and how we can help…

What causes spider veins?

There are a number of genetic and environmental factors that can contribute to the development of spider veins. In many cases, spider veins are caused by excessive exposure to the sun or extreme temperatures, while other possible causes include pregnancy, ageing, rosacea, and other skin conditions. The condition is fairly common, and certain people tend to be more susceptible to the issue than others. Those who spend a lot of time outside, for example, are more at risk of the condition, as are those who sit or stand for long periods every day.

What are the treatment options?

Fortunately, there are a number of ways in which the appearance of spider veins can be reduced in order to improve the overall appearance of the skin. One of the most effective treatments is laser therapy — this treatment involves the use of advanced lasers that target the widened blood vessels, causing the blood with the vein to coagulate and eventually destroying the vessels. During laser treatment, pulses of light are delivered to the target area, which can effectively destroy a broad range of vessels, from tiny spider veins to deep blue reticular veins. The process does not cause any considerable discomfort — you may feel a sensation similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. A cooled treatment tip will be in contact with the skin in order to provide protection, as well as additional comfort to the site of treatment.

Other treatment options include surgery, which involves the removal of the widened vessels; and sclerotherapy, which involves the injection of a chemical solution that damages the inner lining of the blood vessels.

After treatment for spider veins, you can expect the appearance of your skin to be considerably improved. You will notice a visible reduction in unsightly veins, and your skin will appear healthier.
