Is MiraDry effective?

Miradry is considered effective for reducing underarm sweat and odour. It’s a non-invasive procedure that delivers carefully controlled electromagnetic energy to the sweat glands. Side effects are usually mild and resolve within a few days to a few weeks. It does not impact the body’s ability to regulate its normal temperature. Are there any side effects?

Localised soreness and/or swelling in the armpit, which can extend onto the chest wall, is common. This is temporary and generally clears within a few days. Some experience more severe thickening in the armpit called banding which can last a few weeks. Less commonly, patients may experience short-term altered sensation in the skin of the upper arm.

Does the MiraDry procedure hurt?

The procedure itself is designed to be relatively comfortable, but individual experiences can vary. Before the treatment, local anaesthesia is typically administered to numb the area, which helps minimise discomfort during the procedure. During Miradry treatment, patients may feel some pressure, pulling, or mild warming sensations as the device is applied to the skin and emits energy to target the sweat glands. After the treatment, some temporary soreness, swelling, or numbness in the treated area can occur, but these effects usually resolve within a few days. MiraDry is also extremely effective in treating patients with body odour. In some Asian countries, patients are more likely to have the procedure for odour rather than excessive sweating.

What happens during MiraDry treatment?

The procedure is done under local anaesthesia by one of our fully accredited MiraDry practitioners. A template is used to precisely outline the treatment area. Local anaesthetic is infiltrated to make the treatment area numb. It also acts as a barrier to protect the underlying structures. MiraDry involves targeted microwave ablation of the sweat glands, destroying them permanently.

The Miradry procedure typically takes about one hour to complete for both underarms, including the application of local anaesthesia to numb the area and minimise discomfort. For most patients, one session of Miradry is sufficient to achieve a significant reduction in underarm sweating and odour. Some patients may require a second session for optimal results, depending on the severity of their hyperhidrosis or their individual response to the treatment. Our medical team at North Western Vascular will evaluate your treatment response and advise if further sessions are necessary. Typically, if needed, additional sessions are scheduled several months apart.
