If you are embarrassed or otherwise bothered by sweaty armpits or odour, miraDry can help.

MiraDry has been proven to be highly effective for those suffering from excessive underarm sweating and relieves the stress and embarrassment of body odour.

How Does miraDry work?

MiraDry delivers carefully controlled microwave energy to your underarm sweat glands through a handheld device.

Through a heating process known as thermolysis, miraDry destroys the sweat glands while the surface of the skin remains cool. MiraDry is considered a permanent treatment for excessive underarm sweating because it results in the permanent destruction of the sweat glands.

Since the axillae make up only 2% of the body’s surface area, the elimination of axillary sweat glands does not affect the body’s ability to regulate body temperature.

The process is quick and non-invasive. Downtime is limited with an early return to work following miraDry. You will be advised to avoid strenuous exercise for a few days after. To remain comfortable, ice packs to the armpits and over-the-counter pain medication in the first few days after treatment is recommended.

Our Experience with miraDry

North Western Vascular introduced MiraDry to the practice in 2014 after extensive research and are confident in its ability to treat axillary hyperhidrosis and odour. MiraDry gained FDA (USA) approval in 2011 and TGA (Australia) in 2014.

Our vascular surgeons are accredited and have extensive experience in performing the treatments and are truly valued by our practice for their skill and ability to empathise with patients.

We have performed well over 700 miraDry procedures at Northwestern Vascular. If you are considering miraDry treatment, please contact us or call one of our friendly staff to book an obligation free appointment.

MiraDry Versus Other Treatments

There are a number of treatment options to control underarm sweating and they each have their benefits. However, of all the options, miraDry is the only highly-effective permanent solution to excessive underarm sweating.

MiraDry FAQs

Why do I sweat so much from my armpits?
It affects up to 2% of the population.  When it affects the armpits, it is called axillary hyperhidrosis. This is a common area for excessive sweating, as there is a high concentration of sweat (eccrine) glands in the axillae.
Anti-perspirants, including the stronger Aluminium based agents is the first line of treatment. Injectables are effective, but provide temporary relief only, and therefore need to be repeated every 3 to 6 months. Sympathetic ablation (ETS) is an option for hyperhidrosis, but has a failure rate of 20% for axillary hyperhidrosis), and a higher risk of CS. We believe that miraDry is a better option for excessive axillary sweating or odour.
MiraDry is a procedure suitable for anyone bothered or embarrassed by sweaty armpits or odour. The recommendation is for 2 separate treatments at least 3 months apart, to achieve the best outcome
There is minimal downtime following miraDry. We recommend over-the-counter pain medication and the use of ice packs for the first 24 to 48 hours to minimize any pain or discomfort. A medical certificate can be obtained, so please discuss with our staff.
We have found that 70% of our patients are satisfied after one treatment. Microscopic examination of skin biopsies shows a 50 – 90% reduction in viable sweat glands following one miraDry treatment. If the problem is severe, for optimal results patients may require a second session, at least three months later.
Localised soreness and/or swelling in the armpit, which can extend onto the chest wall, is common. This is temporary and generally clears within a few days. Some experience more severe thickening in the armpit called banding which can last a few weeks. Less commonly, patients may experience short-term altered sensation in the skin of the upper arm.
Since the sweat glands do not have the capacity to regenerate, miraDry produces a permanent result. If the desired outcome is not achieved after one treatment, patients generally respond well to a second session.
MiraDry is also extremely effective in treating patients with body odour. In some Asian countries, patients are more likely to have the procedure for odour rather than excessive sweating.
We began miraDry treatment in October 2014 and became fully accredited soon after. North Western Vascular prides itself on being the leader in hyperhidrosis treatment offering exceptional service to patients. To date, we have treated over 700 patients with outstanding results.
Patients are reporting a dramatic reduction in axillary sweating and odour.  Approximately 80% achieve the desired outcome with one treatment. A second treatment is recommended for optimal results, however, is only required in 20% of patients.
North Western Vascular was treating patients who suffered from axillary hyperhidrosis with sympathectomy which required treatment in hospital, under a general anaesthetic. Although the results were very good following sympathectomy, a small number developed rebound sweating, which at times negated the benefit. On the other hand, miraDry carries no risk of rebound sweating, can be performed under local anaesthetic in our rooms with virtually no downtime, no incisions and takes only 1 ½ hrs. Importantly, success rates are high with miraDry and the benefit is permanent.
The procedure is done under local anaesthesia by one of our fully accredited miraDry practitioners. A template is used to precisely outline the treatment area. Local anaesthetic is infiltrated to make the treatment area totally numb. It also acts as a barrier to protect the underlying structures. MiraDry involves targeted microwave ablation of the sweat glands, destroying them permanently.
The procedure is done by our fully accredited miraDry Practitioner in our procedure room. Local anaesthetic is used to numb the axilla, and also acts to protect the underlying tissues. The presence of local anaesthetic means that the patient experiences minimal discomfort during the procedure.
No, it can only be used for axillary sweating or odour. There is no approval for its use on other areas of the body.
Histological studies show the majority of sweat glands are destroyed by the thermal injury imparted by the microwaves. From the patient’s perspective, there is a 50 – 90% reduction in sweating and the results are usually immediate.
Generally, patients will require one treatment on Level 5, however, if hyperhidrosis is severe, then for optimal results, a second treatment is recommended.
No, the sweat glands that have been destroyed during treatment will not regenerate.
There is no typical patient as axillary hyperhidrosis can affect people of all professions and backgrounds. Generally, patients we see have suffered from severe underarm sweating and/or odour for many years and have tried other forms of treatment such as Botox injections or aluminium-based deodorants which can cause irritation and only offer temporary relief. MiraDry is suitable for anyone who is bothered by underarm sweating and does not want to deal with the embarrassment of sweat patches under the arms.
Yes, miraDry is suitable for all skin types.
The feedback from our patients has been extremely good with approximately 80% of patients having a dramatic reduction in underarm sweating of between 50 to 90%. Patients have reported renewed confidence and a sense of freedom following treatment as they no longer need to worry about wet patches or odour.
We have Nurse practitioners fully accredited by Miramar, who have undergone the required training, administering miraDry. We ensure optimal treatment with an extremely high safety record.
MiraDry has definitely revolutionised hyperhidrosis treatment as patients undergo the procedure in 1 ½ hours with minimal downtime. Unlike Injections which temporarily disable sweat glands requiring ongoing regular treatments, miraDry offers a permanent solution as the sweat glands that are destroyed do not regenerate.
